Delhi, the capital city of the Republic of India, is one of the country’s fastest-growing metropolitan centres. Spread along the western banks of the River Yamuna, the city blends a glorious historic past with a vibrant modern culture and is home to some of India’s finest museums and monuments.

New Delhi, designed by the renowned British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869–1944), is a city of broad tree-lined avenues and stately buildings. According to legend, Delhi was originally founded as Indraprastha by the Pandavas, the heroes of the epic Mahabharata, around 1200 B.C. Today’s Delhi rises around the ruins of seven ancient cities, offering a fascinating journey through time.
