Agra, a medieval city on the banks of the Yamuna River, was founded by Sultan Sikandar Lodi in 1506 and rose to prominence as the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1526 to 1658. Today, it remains a major tourist destination for its splendid Mughal-era monuments — most notably the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri, all UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Visit the imposing Agra Fort, originally a brick fortress held by the Chauhan Rajputs and later transformed under Sikandar Lodi, who ruled from here before his son, Ibrahim Lodi, lost it to the Mughals at Panipat in 1526.

See the world-famous Taj Mahal, overlooking the River Yamuna. This masterpiece of Mughal architecture was built by Emperor Shah Jahan between 1632 and 1653 as a mausoleum for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. He too was laid to rest beside her upon his death in 1666. (Closed on Fridays).
